June Fishing is Looking Good

June Fishing on Lake Palestine Should Be Great

Lake Palestine is just above full pool, clear and 75 degrees. During June, fishing can be just down right great if you can stand our Texas heat but of course with all the rain we're getting it may be the steam we have to contend with.

You can catch just about every kind fish that you like to fish for this month. My favorite will always be the large mouth bass and here are a few things I will do to find and then catch them.

Now as I start I’m going to talk about fishing deep a lot because that’s a way that I really love to fish but I also need to tell you that June is the official month for top water fishing and it is also Take A Kid Fishing Month.

First, I will get a good map of the lake and if you cant find a map I still have a few left that I can sell that have GPS and other features on them for just $10.00. These are the good AID maps that provide lots of information on them. Now after you get your map, figure out what areas you feel are the most productive spots to catch large bass and also numbers of bass.

I like fishing both the shallow water and deep water. I will rig up several rods with different lures to fish both deep and shallow. First I will rig up a deep diving crank bait in a shad color then I will rig up a Carolina rig with a watermelon colored Mister Twister pin worm and a Texas rig with a watermelon colored Mister Twister Sensation worm. Next I will rig up a lure I build called a Shimmy Shaker and last but not least a lure that I call my count down lure.

Now I know that most of you know what the crank baits and plastic worms are but you may not have seen my Shimmy Shaker lures and I know you have not seen or heard about the count down lure. The count down lure is a white swim jig that I build and fish with a soft plastic swim bait on it. The way I fish the count down lure is, I just cast it out and let it sink down to a depth where I see fish on my fish finder and then I will swim it back to the boat very slow keeping it in the strike zone of the fish I located on my Lowrance fish finder.

I find these fish with my graph first and then I place my boat in a way that I can cast the lure out to the place where I saw the fish on my Lowrance fish finder. Now once I have located and set my boat up I will cast the count down lure out and count it down to the depth where I saw the fish and hang on. If your fishing the count down jig in a lake that has grass well your still OK with the count down lure for it is very weedless and comes through the grass very well.

I will look for my fish on the deep points, deep creek channels, creek bends and old road ways. I will spend at least one hour on each spot with the different lures until I feel I can’t catch any fish from this spot. I will have several of these deep water spots to try and when I find fish I will check the time of day and remember the spot because I can come back to this spot 15 minutes later each day and find fish feeding in the same spot.

Another thing to remember is always pull your lures up the ridges in the summer time and down the ridges in the winter. Bass will be more active during the warm months and will chase a lure out away from where he is hiding and by pulling up a point you can keep them in close and this will allow you to catch more fish. If you pull your lure down

a point the bass will chase it out away from his hiding place into the deeper water and it will take them longer to regroup and this will tend to make you think you caught all of your active fish and cause you to move to new locations.

Now for the shallow water you can find the bass good early on top waters such as yellow manic chuggers, buzz baits and Long A jerk baits. Another great lure for shallow water fishing will be my Shimmy Shaker lure.

Earlier I spoke of the Shimmy Shaker but didn't tell you where and how to fish it. The Shimmy Shaker is a lure that can be fished down deep like a jig or pulled faster like a spinner bait and rigged with a frog as it's trailer it can be worked on the surface like a buzz bait. My Shimmy Shaker is a lure that I will always have tied on because I can work it so many ways to catch my fish. I make and sell the Shimmy Shaker and it can be seen on my web site rickysguideservice.com.

I like to fish the Shimmy Shaker around brush, grass, rocky areas and boat docks. The Shimmy Shaker is a lure that I think can”t be beat due to it working so well deep or shallow. Try fishing for bass and use the lures I mentioned and I feel you will go home a winner,
Crappie can be found on brush piles in about 17 to 20 feet of water. Jigs fished slowly over the top of the brush will produce some mighty fine crappie for you.

Sand bass and hybrids will be good shallow early and later on in the morning you will find them out on your points or road ways in about 15 foot. You can catch them on top waters , Shimmy Shakers and rat-l-traps early and my big Eye Skirted Jigging Spoons.

Catfish are doing very good on Lake Palestine and you will find that this lake is stacked full of channel cat. That’s right you can find cat fish just about any place on the lake where you find a sandy bottom. Night crawlers and punch baits will work well for you. Before I close I want to remind you if you’re going to tackle the heat then be sure to take a good sun lotion and plenty of water to drink and always when your on the water think safety and ware your life vest for the life you save may just be yours.

Another lake I guide on is Lake Fork and at this time you can find bass doing doing well both shallow and deep. Small spinner baits and top waters will work in the shallows and big crank baits and count down lures will work on the deep ridges. Lake Fork is above full and a lot of your tree markings are under water so be careful when running the lake.

If you’re coming to Lake Palestine or Lake Fork and need a guide then email me at [email protected] or call me at (903) 530- 2201.

If you would like to try the lures that I build then give me a call or shoot me an email and we will get you fixed up with some of the best Bass catching lures made today. I build them one at a time so you can make special orders on colors as well as blade colors.
Until next month remember to keep only the fish you can use and release the rest so that our kids can enjoy the great sport we call fishing.

Good Luck and Good Fishing

Please remember June is take a kid fishing month!

Lake Palestine

Fishing Report from TPWD (Nov. 20)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 68 degrees; 1.08 feet below pool. There is not a lot of freshwater runoff from the recent rains because the vegetation is absorbing most of it. Water temps remain in the upper 60s, but should begin dropping soon as the fall fronts begin. Bass fishing remains good, as the fish pursue shad that are moving into the creeks to the warmer water. Reports of success moving slowly up the mid and upper lower lake creeks with both surface lures and swimbaits. Target areas with 4 feet or less to find the shad. Fishing the more open parts of Chimney Cove and Cobb near the mouths should also be productive, especially on sunny afternoons, if the shad gather there. Catfish remain good for daytime rod-and-reelers, though the channels remain small. Please review the notes from the Outdoor Annual for Lake Palestine regarding catfish, those notes show that the normal state limits for both channel and blue catfish are superseded and different. Bluegill or perch fishing has been good around the mid and lower lake bridges with a No. 2 crappie hook and small minnows for the larger ones, or worms. Anticipate some yellow bass, excellent eating, no size or number limits, mixed in. Report by Jim Beggerly, Jim’s Fishing Lake Palestine.
